The new standards UNI EN-1176 version 2018 in Italian language called “Equipment and surfaces for play areas” implement the European Standards EN-1176:2017.
The UNI EN-1176:2017 standards are not considered retroactive (a requirement that applies to all standards), so the European certifying body TÜV SÜD has also expressed. It means that the managing or owning entity of the play area has the discretion to decide whether or not to adapt its facilities to the current standards. To limit economic commitments, usually public entities intervene “in batches” by planning the replacement and starting with the oldest and most critical structures.
Please note: all new construction must necessarily comply with the revision! As of October 2018, specifications and tenders must require correspondence to the new EN-1176:2017 Standards.
UNI EN 1176-1:2018 Playground equipment and surfaces:
UNI EN 1176-1 General safety requirements and test methods. This standard specifies general safety requirements for permanently installed equipment and surfaces for public play areas (playgrounds, school play areas, public spaces, etc…) It deals with play area equipment for all children. It was developed with full recognition of the need for supervision of young children and less able or less competent children. The standard is also the reference for the safety of inclusive playgrounds.
