Case history
Robinia wood playgrounds benefit from the excellent technological qualities of this wood species, which Legnolandia sources directly from forests in its region, avoiding costly imports in terms of emissions. Robinia pseudoacacia is a plant in the Fabaceae family, also known as Leguminosae, native to North America and introduced to Europe in the 1600s where it is now widely distributed in all countries. Robinia is an invasive species, robinia forests prevent the growth within them of many types of flora and fungi of the undergrowth, this makes it necessary to periodically thin the plants. Timber is thus made available for various construction purposes, offering an outstanding alternative to exotic species (such as Teack) that can thus be saved from deforestation.
The qualities of locust wood were appreciated from the beginning of the 20th century, with its use for poles in agriculture, in the shipbuilding industry, and in making props for mining operations. Robinia wood is in fact stronger than oak or larch wood, is extremely resistant to load and bending, and is extraordinarily resistant to dynamic loads. Robinia wood used for playground equipment offers excellent performance in terms of strength, design and durability.
Robinia’s high resistance to plant and animal pests concerns the heartwood (inner part), which accounts for about 80 percent of the trunk. The natural slightly twisted course of Robinia logs give them a natural appearance and a certain rustic charm. Particularly in playground equipment, Robinia wood allows for a fairy-tale reading of children’s equipment and optimal inclusion in parks in harmony with nature.
At Legnolandia, the centenary experience in woodworking is combined with its technological innovation with which always aims to the top research of safety, allows the construction of durable, design and above all safe play equipment and furniture in Robinia wood. The particularity of Robinia wood, with its natural shapes requires much attention with the calculation of the free spaces in order to avoid the entrapment of parts of the children’s body during the play. Special certified devices help Legnolandia master craftsmen to assemble properly all components by creating safe and functional plays.
Robinia Playground Equipment is produced by using natural trunks that are debarked, smoothed and worked entirely by hand. The high static and mechanical resistance of the Robinia Wood allows a long life for play structures, equipment and furniture even if they are installed “nature” without any specific surface treatment. It is possible to install the equipment that maintains the color of the natural Robinia Wood, or on demand, painted with non-toxic and Biological colors for outdoor.
At Legnolandia for our over ten years of experience, and for the attention we always had for the safety of our children and the possibility of making them play in an inclusive way, we design, produce and install our black locust wood – robinia wood play equipment built according to the customer’s needs, also by fitting it to the specific “theme” of the playground. We have a wide range of made in Italy equipment: climbing structures, houses, slides, skill tracks, sensory paths, seesaws and swings.
